When I read band biographies, I’m not particularly interested on the long tales of how all the members met or how the lead singer descended into drug hell or how someone went through a divorce in detail or whatever. Sure, all that’s interesting to know if you’re a big fan of the band and occasionally it explains things in the band’s music, but my main interest in biographies are the tales about the studio time. How the albums were created, the decisions made, the reasons in the stylistic changes and experimentation and the birthstories of the songs.

So when I learned quite some time ago that one of my favourites, R.E.M., had a book out on all of their songs and stories behind them (descriptively titled “Inside Out – The Stories Behind Every Song” – apparently a part of some larger series), I got the proverbial stiffy. I was originally going to wait until the book would come out with a new edition with all the info from the songs from this year’s Accelerate but after I saw they were almost out of the book on Amazon, I pfft’d at my promise and just got it.
