Grammatics album tracklist leak?
December 11th, 2008 by Mag
Grammatics (also known as ‘that band Mag is obsessed with’), released their latest single ‘The Vague Archive‘ last month. It’s is a re-recording of an older song from their Japan-only EP, but is now an album track from their upcoming full-length, and based on the quality of the single, I’m getting pretty excited for its release.
What I really want to talk about today though is the remix b-side to the single. Remix b-sides aren’t ever as good as original song b-sides. It’s almost like a cheap way of filling the blank side of the vinyl; get some guy to remix the song and bung it on there as filler. When I first heard the ‘D.I.L.E.M.M.A’ remix Anteater (ยกForward, Russia!) did for them, I was was skeptical as to whether he could pull it off since it was pretty average, but his remix for TVA blow me away. He really created something special.
The track opens with various sounds intertwining together: ticking clocks, church bells and a rainy soundscape. It might all sound odd on paper, but it works really well. He doesn’t overdo it with the sounds though, they quickly fade out to an upbeat piano. Eventually a familiar voice rings in singing the opening verse, while some some subtle, yet upbeat electronic drum are added to the mix. The beat slows into climbing and falling piano, a wall of choir vocals and strings. It all very pretty and sounds magical. Slowly all the layers are removed one-by-one until all that remains is an electronic beep. It then erupts into an upbeat, dancey section with hand claps, buzzy basslines and all that dance stuff. It’s stops again and the chorus begins, erupting yet again into fast electro dance awesomeness of the purest form. The only letdown is that it lasts for measly a twenty seconds, but they are by far the best twenty seconds of the song. Overall the track is brilliant and definitely blew away my expectations.
In other Grammatics news, the tracklist for their upcoming album has sort of leaked to last.fm and my keen fanboy eyes gazed upon their glory and got excited/aroused. Keep in mind this is just my compilation of data, is in no way accurate or final to what will be released, but at least we have a rough guide to track names and times that give us an idea of what to expect!! Still no official release date for the album, but I’ll keep you updated. Anyways, check it:
