Viola – The Hardest Hit
Heartache on the dancefloor has never sound this cool. Put on your sunglasses and surrender to your feelings under the mirrorball.

Digital Underground – Humpty Dance
Kickin’ it old school here, the Digital Underground were an interesting group that combined rock and old school hip hop elements into their own unique sound. And yes, this is another funny music video.

The Grid – Swamp Thing
My original exposure to this song was found on a “Best of the three in the park” mixed 3 CD set that I found on ebay back in 1997. I loved the song for it cajun flavored techno sound. The Grid’s full album is just as good as this one song, and definitely worth picking up.

Phonat – Learn To Recycle (Original Mix)
More classic dancefloor music, with a sort of Daft Punk edge to it. When it shifts into double time, you know what to do! (Clue: move your feet.)

Max Tundra – Which Song (Silverlink Remix)
I think when remixing a Max Tundra song, you’ll find yourself stripping things down rather than adding upon it, and this is exactly what Silverlink has done to Max Tundra’s latest ‘Parallax Error Beheads You’ single, Which Song. It’s great!

Junior Senior – We R The Handclaps
It’s a tough thing to choose which Junior Senior song you choose when you want to bring some ridiculously happy discopop into the room. Why this one? Irresistible handclap action, funky basslines, singalong goodness… Why not this one? You can’t help but smile when you groove along with that special someone.

Twins – Girls’ School Male Student (Back To School Mix)
I found this song on asian techno CD in Chinatown, Toronto. Makes me wish I could understand the lyrics at times, but at other times, the fact I have no idea what is being sung about lends a lot to the songs charm.

The Crash – I Never Dance
Even those of us who can’t dance still want to do it whenever we feel the groove. Wonderful underspoken album gem from Finnish sugar-pop stars that alternates between standing in the corner nervously and finally getting the courage to suavely move around the room.

Passion Pit – Sleepyhead
Recommended by a friend, it’s got great vocals and oh my… that synth is fucking gorgeous! Not much else to say, other than I want an album by these guys!

Maldroid – Heck No! (I’ll Never Listen To Techno)
Heck No! – I first found this song via a link to the music video on youtube. Look it up. It’s chock full of Lite-bright love…and good music, of course. ;)

Fox n’ Wolf -  Electric Date
Foxxy Swedish dance dance dance!!! This one’s a little strange, I admit, but they have a great name and an undeniably cute style, and you can dance your face off to them!!!!

Klubbingman – Love Message
This is one of my favourite dance tracks ever. It’s actually a remix/cover of a 90’s eurodance superstar group single that was made to raise awareness about AIDS and protection; the remix ditches all but the chorus vocals and turns it from eurodance to a club anthem born to fill the dancefloors in the depths of night. While I’m not gonna go much into detail, I encountered this song while watching a video of a group of people walking around Paris at midnight. Those dreamy, hazy images of nightlife wandering have lent the song an atmosphere of its own for me.

Amadou & Mariam – Sabali
Amadou and Mariam are from Africa and surprisingly both blind. This isn’t quite ‘get up and dance’, but I couldn’t resist adding this to the mixtape. The soft synth and climbing/falling arpeggios are just wonderful. Took me a while to get over the vocals, since I’m not a fan of non-English vocals in music, but it’s rather catchy, despite not knowing one word they’re singing! I think they’re definitely one of the bigger artists for this year. Keep your eyes open for them!

SOUL’d OUT – To All Tha Dreamers
One of the ending themes for the anime series Yakitate Japan. Go give the ending sequence a check on Youtube and you’ll see just why I keep having images of discodancing afroheads with this. Also, four to the floor anthem.

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele – You Can’t Force A Dance Party
You Can’t Force a Dance Party – Beware, Ukulele music. But seriously, it’s really good music! Can’t say it makes me want to get up and dance, but the title of the song was just too good not to include in our “get up and dance” mixtape!

One Response to “Indie Paws Mixtape: Volume 5”

  1. Keto Says:

I’ll be honest, half the list I like, and the other half I like. But considering that I’ve been searching for new music for over an hour now, and got nothing until NOW…. I got a decent grip of music I like here. :)

    Thanks a lot! Good stuff.
