Some bullet points on the new Bat for Lashes album

Sunday, February 15th, 2009 by Flint
  • - It’s good.
  • - It’s not as good as the first album however.
  • - The overall style is a bit synthier than on the first album, some songs are downright synthpop. These moments are pretty much awesome throughout. Generally the album keeps the mystic. nocturnal tone of the first album.
  • - However, whenever the album doesn’t rely on synths it suddenly takes a twist to not as great and sometimes downright forgettable. This is why Two Suns isn’t as good as Fur & Gold: there’s a lot of moments that are as good and sometimes better than some of the debut’s  best moments, but also songs that are weaker than the weakest ones on the debut.
  • - Speaking of forgettable, the collaboration songs (Yeasayer and Scott Walker show up here) are quite unremarkable.
  • - Sleep Alone reminds me of Radiohead’s I Might Be Wrong but Batforlashified.
  • - Sleep Alone, Daniel and Pearl’s Dream are the grandest highlights and pretty damn awesome. Two Planets is pretty amazing too.
  • - I’d love to share some of these lovely moments with you but the leaked nature of this all makes me very, very wary and thus I won’t.
  • - That cover is WTF.

Your Friday Fix (11/14/2008)

Friday, November 14th, 2008 by Ipequey

Well, hopefully, you enjoyed some of the stuff I posted last week, and hopefully, some of it was new to your ears :) Perhaps we can develop some sort of Pavlovian response in which you’ll come here eagerly waiting to hear some new and old stuff each Friday. *grins* Enjoy!

Miniature Tigers – Cannibal Queen (2008) Miniature Tigers is a three man band from Pheonix, Arizona with a few EPs under their belt. This song is off their first full length album “Tell It To The Volcano”, released this September. I love how catchy the bass is, keeping rhythm like Blondie’s “Call Me” did.

Passion Pit – Better Things (2008) Another soon to be great band from Cambridge, Massachusetts, Passion Pit needs more attention than it’s gotten. With it’s chaotic vocal styles that seem to be delivered from more bands (Black Kids, Port O’brien), they don’t fail to deliver a really enjoyable song with “Better Things”…once you get past all that filler at the beginning of the song.

Blitzen Trapper – Furr (2008) A bit more country/folkish in sound, this Portland, Oregon band should not be considered a country/folk band, as their music includes electronic and rock stylings quite often. I love the metaphorical meaning the lyrics of this song have.

Bat For Lashes – A Forest (2008) I didn’t think anyone could “out goth” the Cure, but I’m gonna toss in vote for Bat For Lashes. Hailing from Brighton, England this band is one of many contributors to “Perfect As Cats: A Tribute to the Cure”, including The Dandy Warhols, Army Navy and a slew of other obscure bands I’ve never heard of. Dear Santa…please buy me this album. *grins*

The Republic Tigers – Buildings & Mountains (2008) The Republic Tigers is the result of a long off-and-on collaboration and friendship between Kenn Jankowski and Adam McGill. Before forming The Republic Tigers, they worked together on a few tracks for a project coined “Fi”. Jankowski then went on to do some work for “Golden Republic” and when that fizzled, he went back to work with McGill in Kansas City, Missouri. They’ve only released one EP prior to this years full length album “Keep Color”.

Hope you enjoy them, and please, feel free to leave comments! :3
