Grammatics ‘Double Negative’ new single

Thursday, October 8th, 2009 by Mag

Double Negative cover

One of my favourite bands emerging from the past few years has been Grammatics. Watching them grow from some very promising early singles (”Shadow Committee” / “D.I.L.E.M.M.A“) to eventually releasing their stonkingly awesome self-titled debut early this year, gaining a ton of positive reviews and giving them their much deserved attention.

They’re doing rather well for themselves right now, currently touring with Bloc Party on their (awfully punned) Bloctober tour. There’s also been a little talk here and there of work on a second album, but no solid details have emerged from that.

Solid details have, however, emerged of a new single. It’s called “Double Negative” and doesn’t feature on the album. It’s more of their signature complex pop with a really beautiful, soaring chorus. Owen digs back to his punk roots a little, bursts of strong screaming contrasting with his almost angelic vocal-style. The single also features a great cover of “Notes in his Pockets” by The Good Life as its b-side.

You can grab the single right now from iTunes, but the physical single will released October 26th on 7″ by label Dance to The Radio. If you pre-order the 7″ from DTTR’s online store right now, you’ll get the mp3s to download right away before the release date, so jump on that deal NOW!!

New Grammatics EP out July 27th

Saturday, July 25th, 2009 by Mag

Grammatics

After the release of Grammatics’ incredible self-titled debut album, they’ve been doing some pretty big things. They toured with Maximo Park and Rolo Tomassi throughout March and even secured themselves an upcoming tour alongside Bloc Party for October, so it comes with no surprise to hear news of ‘Murderer EP’ to accompany this. It will feature ‘Murderer’ with remixes from Cale Parks and The Requesters. There’s even a couple of new songs on there, ‘The New Sobriety’ and a new version of ‘Kicking Krutches’.

It’s all pretty exciting, plus you can pick up the entire thing for only £2.49 on iTunes. Bargain.

Mp3: Richmanu’s ‘Return To The Scene Of The Crime’ Murderer remix
Mp3: The Requesters’ Murderer remix <– If you only grab one mp3, get this one. It’s AWESOME.

Grammatics album tracklist leak?

Thursday, December 11th, 2008 by Mag

Grammatics (also known as ‘that band Mag is obsessed with’), released their latest single ‘The Vague Archive‘ last month. It’s is a re-recording of an older song from their Japan-only EP, but is now an album track from their upcoming full-length, and based on the quality of the single, I’m getting pretty excited for its release.

What I really want to talk about today though is the remix b-side to the single. Remix b-sides aren’t ever as good as original song b-sides. It’s almost like a cheap way of filling the blank side of the vinyl; get some guy to remix the song and bung it on there as filler. When I first heard the ‘D.I.L.E.M.M.A’ remix Anteater (¡Forward, Russia!) did for them, I was was skeptical as to whether he could pull it off since it was pretty average, but his remix for TVA blow me away. He really created something special.

The Vague Archive

Saturday, October 18th, 2008 by Mag

If you be a regular to this here iPaws website, I’m sure you’re by now familiar with the name Grammatics. If not, this would be a great place to start getting into this funawesome band. They’ve just released the video to ‘The Vague Archive’, an upcoming single from their currently untitled debut album release. It’s actually a re-recording of an older song from their Japan EP thing, but it’s had some updates in vocals, instrumentals and whatnot. It starts off like your average frolicking-in-the-meadow pop video, but once the rain starts and the slow motion cameras come out, it gets rather pretty. Oh and when the drum stick hits the cymbal and all the water splashes off it… mmm yeah baby, that’s the spot.

Also congratulations to me for making the 3,000th Grammatics post on iPaws! Shrimp and white wine will be available momentarily.

Grammatics @ Barfly, London, 13 August 2008

Thursday, August 21st, 2008 by Mag

Grammatics set off on a brief tour around the UK in support of their recently released single, New Franchise, so naturally I booked myself some tickets and headed over to The Barfly, London to see them play with a couple of friends. I love smaller venues; you don’t really have to put up with the mass of crowds you do at larger ones and you can get up close and personal with the band. The Barfly is nice however, in that it has the atmosphere of a larger venue yet still has that homey personal touch. We got there a little early, bought a drink and headed upstairs. The walls are painted black and it feels a lot like a basement, only instead of being cooler it was hotter, and upstairs. People started to gather in and eventually the first of three bands took to the stage.

Yet more Grammatics news

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008 by Mag

Regular iPaws readers may have spotted a trend I’ve gotten myself into, and that is writing about Leeds band Grammatics. I’m deeply, deeply obsessed with them and find myself following their every move with hawk eyes. Their download-only single, New Franchise, with the somewhat sloppy release date of August 4th has actually been released a couple of days early. It’s a very awesome single, and you should go download it, since it’s free. They have also shot and recorded the video to New Franchise, filmed in the woods of Otley Chevin at the dead of night. It’s a very chilling video and suits the song well. Hit the jump to give it a watch.

One last thing… news posted on their site informs me they played an acoustic session on BBC Radio 5. Unfortunately I missed the show, but was able to download it from BBC’s sorry excuse of a podcast. They must have edited out Grammatics since they didn’t actually perform on it, nor were even mentioned. Typical. Ah well, I’ll be joining them in London on the 13th, so expect even more Grammatics related articles to come!

New Franchise!

Saturday, July 19th, 2008 by Mag

Just checked out the official Grammatics website for tour dates (trying to arrange going to see them) and noticed they put their upcoming download-only single, New Franchise (to be released August 4th), up for streaming. You can’t download it yet obviously, but you can listen to the full-length track a few weeks early.

I’ve listened to it a few times already, sounding really awesome! It opens with a distant, eerie piano, adding vocals while slowly building into a distinct Grammatics style, with their upbeat drums and layered strings. It lacks the bouncy energy of their previous singles, Shadow Committee and D.I.L.E.M.M.A, but it’s a different kind of song, so don’t get me wrong… it still sounds friggin’ awesome. Hearing this just makes me even more exited for their debut! Can’t wait!

note: This being the 2nd Grammatics post, i’ve officially ruined the tag cloud :D

Grammatics announcements!

Thursday, June 26th, 2008 by Mag

I’ve been following Leeds band Grammatics for some time now. They only have a few songs and a couple of singles released (all of which are awesome), but this month brings big news for them. Firstly an announcement on their myspace says work has begun on their debut album:

We’ve just got to the studio in Bridlington on the East coast of Yorkshire where will be living for around 2 months (with trips out to festivals on the weekends) while we make our debut album.

No details on a name or release date, but they’ll be posting regular updates on how it’s all going, along with pics and videos on their website. To keep you tied over until then, they’re releasing a download-only single on August 4th, called ‘New Franchise‘. So mark your calendars and head on over to www.grammatics.co.uk on the 4th for some super new music! They’re also having a small tour to accompany the release, so join them if you can! Dates and locations can be found here.
