Indie Paws Mixtape: Volume 6

mixtape 6

Wow! A long time since the last one. We’ve had plans, we’ve had development hells and finally we’ve actually got something. So once again, the IP crew is bringing you a bunch of ragtag tunes compiled under a vague theme, ready to easily introduce you to new artists or waste your bandwidth with boring tripe.

Today we’re going to offer something very… different. Our writers have compiled together a list of songs so bad that they are good. Songs that they love to listen to but daren’t do so loudly because they wouldn’t dare to be caught listening to them. Yes, it’s time for Indie Paws’ Guilty Pleasures Mixtape!

This is what we’ve got:

  1. Lipps Inc – Funky Town
  2. Ace of Base – The Sign
  3. Sonic Arcade – Sonic & Tails
  4. Marnie Stern – Put All Your Eggs in One Basket and Then Watch That Basket!!!
  5. Bloodhoung Gang – Mope
  6. Hellogoodbye – Call n’ Return
  7. Simon Bookish – Handsome Girls
  8. Digital Underground – The Humpty Dance
  9. Alvin & the Chipmunks – The Time Warp
  10. Chow Nasty – Ungawa
  11. Hanson – Where’s the Love
  12. The Real Heat – Hearts Not Innit
  13. Max Tundra – A Truce
  14. Mephiskapheles – The Bumble Bee Tuna Song
  15. Global Kryner – Funky Town

And after the cut, read individual descriptions of each song by our writers and see why on earth do they listen to this sort of cack.

Mag Monday 7

Monday, May 4th, 2009 by Mag

Here I am again, improving your Mondays with some delicious music! So let’s Goooooooooooooooooooooo!

Polyp EPPeople tend to use the term ‘remix’ too loosely. When you have tracks like ‘Magdalen Bridge / Golden Palace‘ (Hugo Manuel) taken from Youthmovie’s Polyp EP, you can’t really apply the term ‘remix’ to it, since it’s not simply re-mixed and spliced up so the structure of the song is altered, it’s essentially a total re-work of the song, and contains next-to-none of the original song’s music. The only resemblance the track has to the original is the re-timed vocals and the out-of-place break to the choir and feedback section the album version of the song uses as an intro, but wow, what a song it is. It laps away whatever remaining fun boisterousness the song had, and dips it right into a pot of dark, brooding trip-hop. It’s almost as if the song was supposed to be this way, and in ways, outshines the original, which in itself is a great track.

Some Best Friend You Turned Out To BeSince Indie Paws is severely lacking my love for Max Tundra, I present to you: The Batalon. When I first heard this track, from his 2000 debut album, ‘Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be’, I sat there in awe of its intricate, chiptune-esque dancyness (yes it’s a dance song, just wait for it). It still stands as one of my favourite tracks by the guy, and it’s by far my favourite from the album. As much as a I have a flaming man-love passion for Max Tundra, his music struggles to evoke my vocabulary (basically it just leaves me speechless, I don’t know how to describe what i’m hearing half the time), so I don’t really have much else to add. I think what’s best is that you listen and let the music do the talking.

Mag’s delicious top 10 albums of ‘08

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009 by Mag

LAZYYYMost people rush into these top album lists mid-December, but I’ve decided to chill out and really think hard about my top 10 favourite albums from the year that once was. Okay, I lie, I just haven’t got around to it yet. But here it is anyways. :(

So, 2008. It was a toughy, and apparently not so many solid albums were released throughout its economically crashing months. Despite the drought, I’ve still managed to find a good deal of great new artists and albums, a few of which made my overall favourite albums of all times! So without further delay, let’s begin my fruity-flavoured list of top ten albums NOW!!!
