Your Friday Fix (3/27/2009)

You know the drill, enjoy! :)

Dead Heart Bloom – Flash In a Bottle (2008, New York City, NY) Boris Skalsky and Paul Wood of “Phaser” got together with Nate Goheen and John Hadfield a few years back to form “Dead Heart Bloom”. With their charming soft country melodies, you’ll definitely love this band if you like the sound of “Fleet Foxes”. You can find this song on their 2008 EP “In Chains”.

The Uglysuit – Chicago (2008, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) Made up of six friends from Oklahoma City ranging in age from 20-23, The Uglysuit has been playing together since their early teen years. This track can be found on their self titled debut album.

Chairlift – Evident Utensil (2008, Boulder, Colorado) Perhaps better known for “Bruises” on their full length album “Does You Inspire You”, this gem of a track shouldn’t be over looked. This track can be found on both the alum and also on their “Evident Utensil” single. I kinda dig this song, as it feels like it has hints of “80s pop/new wave” music that I’ve always enjoyed, especially so in the refrain.

Paper Route – Empty House (2008, Nashville, Tennessee) Does anyone else hear sounds of “My Morning Jacket” in the melody of the song, or is it just me? I swear that opening riff just smacks of them. At any rate, Paper Route combines a bit of country with a bit of electronic and a bit of pop to make a wonderfully interesting sound. You can find this track on their latest EP “Are We All Forgotten”.

Manchester Orchestra – I’ve Got Friends (2009, Atlanta, Georgia) I love the Manchester Orchestra. These guys were extremely talented at such a young age, and only improve over time. Their up-and-coming album “Means Everything to Nothing” has me very excited. This particular song I believe is a cover of a *coughcough*Garth Brooks*cough* song, or some pop country song, but honestly, even if you can’t stand pop country, this is a really awesome cover. They’ve brought their own style and totally made the song their own.

Elvis Perkins in Dearland – Shampoo (2009, ???, New York) Anyone remember Anthony Perkins from back in the 50s? Well, I can’t honestly say that I do, however, this is his son and his band, “Elvis Perkins in Dearland”. This folky group of musicians just released their self titled debut album earlier this month. They’ve got a great sound, and definitely worth looking into more…and for the life of me, I can’t figure out what is on their album cover.

Fol Chen – Cable TV (2009, Highland Park, CA) I dedicate this great song to my TV set that just died yesterday. Well, and to you our readers as well. *grins* Fol Chen is a relatively new band, just having released their debut album “Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune’s Made” back in February. A bit pop, a bit electronic, this band has an interesting sound that occasionally uses obscure instruments (for US music) such as Sitar, so enjoy! :)
