Your Friday Fix (12/12/2008)

Friday, December 12th, 2008 by Ipequey

As the year comes to an end, I’m both excited about all the soon to be released projects from favorite bands, and stressed trying to whittle down and organize my top albums released this year. I figured that I’d take an opportunity with this Friday Fix to post a few songs that have already been bumped out of the top ten list, whether it be due to the fact I’ve only heard this particular song, or the album had some rough competition…or was released in previous years. So, enjoy and remember, if you like the song, support the artist!

Throw Me The Statue – Lolita (2007) Yet another band from Seattle, Washington, Throw me the Statue is a band I only just discovered this summer. Releasing their debut album “Moonbeams” in 2007, there is no excuse why this album still remains outside of my personal collection. It’s one of those “I keep meaning to buy this” situations, as shiny new albums keep popping up and distracting me. Expect them to release their new album, “Purpleface” in February of 2009. Buy “Moonbeams”

Ghostland Observatory – No Place For Me (2008) One of my favorite local bands, Ghostland Observatory is an electronic group from Austin, Texas. This song is my personal favorite from “Robotique Majestique”, which really wasn’t their best album, but isn’t bad by any means. “No Place For Me”, however, really stands out from the rest on this album. Feel free to check out their 2006 release, “Paparazzi Lightning” which most fans consider to be their best release. Buy “Robotique Majestique”

Nada Surf – Whose Authority (2008, New York City, New York) Nada Surf…where have we heard this name before? Well, if you missed their last spectacular release (”The Weight Is a Gift”) before their current one, “Lucky”, you might remember their hit from 1996, “Popular”. Since then, Nada Surf has been releasing some pretty good albums, but their latest two have been their strongest by far. “Lucky” was released both standalone, and a second time with a bonus CD. I highly recommend their bonus CD albums, as those second discs always seem have some serious gems on them. Buy “Lucky”

VHS Or Beta – Take It or Leave It (2007) Yet another band to only blip late on my radar this year, VHS Or Beta has totally won my heart. Their song can be found on their sophomore album, “Bring On the Comets” which would be on my top 10 list this year…if it were released this year. With a sound that is sometimes electronic, other times rock, this Louisville, Kentucky band is definately worth checking out! Expect me to write a more formal review of this band in the near future… Buy “Bring On the Comets”

Rogue Wave – California (2005) While I don’t agree with the lyrics of this song, I do enjoy the song by Rogue Wave. Off their “Descended Like Vultures” album, this album also contains a number of other great songs, such as “Publish My Love”. Formed in Oakland, California back in 2002, this band has released 3 full length albums, as well as a few EPs and Singles. Buy “Descended Like Vultures”
