Your Friday Fix (12/05/2008)
December 5th, 2008 by IpequeyThe hardest thing about making these posts is that I try to limit the number of songs to five. There is just SO much stuff buzzing through my ears that I’d love to post more. That takes time and would probably just make these posts intimidating and scare folks off. *grins* If you want me too make the Friday Fix contain a few more/less songs, leave comments for my consideration! For now, you’ll get some of the best of what I’ve heard recently, some new, some old. So, on to the good stuff!
The Last Shadow Puppets – Standing Next to Me (2008) The Last Shadow Puppets is a band that consists of Alex Turner of Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane of The Rascals. They released their debut album, The Age Of The Understatement, on the 21st of April 2008 in the UK, and May 6th in the U.S.
The Asteroid Galaxy Tour – Around the Bend (2008) I’m trying to remember which company used this song in a commercial. For some reason, I’m thinking it was used for some hair care product. At any rate, this Copenhagen, Denmark band joins the ranks of other great bands surrounding the Copenhagen area (The Raveonettes, Mew). This song can be found on their spankin’ new EP Sonic Arts.
The Black Ghosts – Full Moon (2008, London) This song might seem familiar, if you’ve seen “Twilight“. The soundtrack has lots of tasty bands involved in the project, such as Paramore, Iron & Wine, Muse and Collective Soul. If, for some reason, you feel embarrassed about buying this soundtrack at your local Hot Topic, this song can be found on their self titled album released this year.
Apples In Stereo – Can You Feel It? (2007) Well, can you? Apples in Stereo have always been known to produce upbeat poppy music. This Boulder, Colorado based band has always put out solid singles and some pretty good albums as well. They’ve even contributed songs for a few Cartoon Network shorts. This song can be found on their New Magnetic Wonder album which was released last year.
The Mountain Goats – No Children (2003) Quirky music accompanied by Eclectic lyrics has always been this Claremont, CA band’s forte. This song is no exception. Granted, it’s not as strange as “Dance Music” (which mentions running upstairs to listen to records while dad beat mom accompanied by a poppy score underneath), but it’s still a great song. Like it? They’ve got quite a large library which includes the album this song is on Tallahassee, so go support them!

Around the Ben was used by Apple in one of their new advertising campaigns. Good choice of Apples in Stereo.

No Children is such a great song. It’s been one of my favorites for a long while. :D

To even compare Dance Music to No Children is blasphemous. Dance Music is a wonderfully quirky song with two good lines. No Children is perhaps the best relationship song of all time (besides Orange Ball of Hate).

@Dakota: *laughs* well, I’ve never claimed to be a righteous man ;) Nor am I terribly oriented towards loving a song because of it’s lyrics. For me, 90% of the song is the tune itself.
